Strange Move

I find it very odd that the Right seems to have come out full force attacking Newt Gingrich ("The Right Drops a Bomb on Newt" Politico 1/26). Even if this all out attack succeeds in handing victory to Romney in Florida, it has such a potential for backfiring as not to be worth the risk. To begins, it risks turning Gingrich into the man of the people as opposed to the man of the party. The last election saw that the rank and file do not always go along with what they are told is in their party's self-interest. The party elites' impact on the rank and file can be seen in the Connecticut and Nevada primaries, where against ht avowed interests of the party, voters chose candidates that probably cost the Republicans the Senate. So it may have the opposite effect. More importantly, even if it damages Gingrich, this attack will probabl not be enough to kill him off politically. And here it is best to remember the line that if you shoot for a king, you must kill him. One thing you do not want is an injured Newt Gingrich. There may be more dangerous political animals, but I am hard pressed to think of one.An injured and bereaved Gingrich can do more damage to the Republicans than a Gingrich candicacy ever could.
